The Murillo Family

As a photographer, every portrait session is special in its own way. But when I had the opportunity to photograph the Murillo family in my studio, it was extra special because I've known the parents, Jessie and Analí, since we were in junior high school. Watching them grow as a family with their two sons, Lenox and Alexander, has been amazing.

As a photographer who specializes in maternity and newborn photography, I rarely photograph families. However, when Anali family approached me about a portrait session, I made an exception because I loved her inspiration, and I thought the studio was the perfect place to execute her ideas. She was inspired by the VIBE Cover Story “Live From Death Row” (Feb ’96). I was excited to try out some creative techniques I don't usually use with newborns, such as posing the family in different ways and experimenting with lighting. It was a fun challenge to step outside my comfort zone and explore another type of photography.

The session started with some posed family portraits to get the formal stuff out of the way. Once the kids warmed up, we did some playful shots of them. We captured some candid moments and their unique personalities with individual portraits. Next, we brought in the parents for solo shots with each of the boys. It was clear to me how much love there was between them. They were all so comfortable with each other, which made for some beautiful and natural poses.

As we continued the session, I couldn't help but think about how much Jessie and Analí had grown since I first met them in junior high. They ware now parents of two amazing boys, and it was clear that they were doing an incredible job raising them. They were patient, kind, and loving, and capturing their family at this moment in time was an honor. Overall, the Murillo family portrait session in my studio was so much fun. I love how the portraits turned out. We captured the Anali’s vision and the essence of their family’s love and bond.

I look forward to watching them grow and capturing more memories for them.
