Studio vs Lifestyle Newborn Photoshoot: What you should know

The arrival of your newborn into the world is right around the corner and you want to document your baby before they change right before your eyes! You have been seeing sleeping babies wrapped up in cloth cocoons nestled in wooden crates on your Pinterest and Instagram feed and let’s face it is cuteness overload! The intricate details of their itty bitty fingers, toes, and let’s not forget about the baby rolls - all things that you want to remember forever. But, how you want to capture the precious moments of your newborn’s first few days of life depends on what is best for you. Let’s dive into the differences between a studio newborn shoot versus a home lifestyle newborn shoot.

A newborn photoshoot in a studio includes different backdrops, wraps, and props that the photographer provides; in a newborn lifestyle shoot, the photographer will use your home as the backdrop, for example, the baby’s nursery or anywhere in your home that your family spends time together. Choosing between a home lifestyle session for your newborn’s photo shoot will ultimately depend on what is right for you. Let’s dive right in.

Newborn Studio Session

  1. You only need to bring your baby! The photographer will have the session set up and ready to go with the backdrops and the sanitized wraps and props handy. You are always welcome to bring a sentimental item to use as a prop in your baby’s shoot.

  2. You have access to a variety of props and backdrops. If you would like to have different color options, textures, and props then you will prefer the studio experience. Having the props and backdrops handy allows the photographer to create different styled baby sets.

  3. Lighting is key for high-quality photos. In the studio, a photographer can manipulate the lighting to capture the highest quality images of your newborn. A skilled photographer can create high-quality images in your home as well, but sometimes the lighting is not always perfect and will not achieve the same results as in the studio. If you are looking for crisp and detailed images of your baby then going with the studio route is for you.

  4. Less Stress! Pregnancy is not always sunshine and rainbows and preparing for your newborn can be stressful. This may involve remodeling and redecorating your home, especially the nursery. An in-home lifestyle shoot requires a clutter-free space and your nursery has to be ready. If you do not want the added stress of preparing for the photoshoot then the studio is right for you!

Newborn Lifestyle Session

  1. You are not comfortable taking the baby out yet. You may simply feel more comfortable staying home because having to put your newborn in the car may make you anxious. A photographer can come to your home, however, keep in mind that it will cost more since they will need to bring all of their equipment with them along with props, in addition to the time spent to set up and pack up.

  2. You do not care for the different props and backdrops. Some people want candid shots of their newborns and use their homes as their backdrop instead. A home lifestyle shoot allows the photographer to capture your newborn and your family unit in an intimate environment where you all spend time together. Your home backdrops typically include the nursery, bedroom, and living room.

  3. Include your entire family in the photo session! Bringing all the kids along to the studio can be hectic for the parents. If keeping the baby sleepy and happy while getting the younger siblings to sit still to pose for a photo sounds a bit overwhelming to you then a lifestyle shoot may be better for you. The younger siblings may feel more comfortable in their home environment and you can also include your fur babies!

  4. You want photos of the nursery! You may have spent a lot of time preparing the nursery and picking out the perfect colors and decorations in time for the baby’s arrival and you want to show it off!

Now you decide!
